PLENARY SESSIONS
The PIX2010 opening session considers emissions trading policy, and looks at
the longer term effects of climate change, some regional implications from
climate science.
The closing plenary looks at the future plans of the new Australian Poultry
Cooperative Research Centre, preparedness for AI and the direction of welfare
codes in a panel discussion by industry and government representatives.
MEAT CHICKEN
These sessions address topics of relevance on-farm and to the whole industry.
The Environment
What is the water, energy and carbon footprint of the Australian meat chicken
industry? How can environmental impacts and resource usage be reduced?
Litter Utilisation
Utilising litter in broad acre farming, is it feasible? Reusing
litter- preliminary results on managing food borne and viral pathogens in
litter.
Darkling Beetles
Do you have problems with black beetles? What strategies are used to manage
darkling beetles in the USA?
Housing & Lighting Information on energy efficient lighting – the options and
how they’ll work on the farm will be presented. Shed environmental control
systems used around the world will be explained.
Free Range Production
Bird health and welfare, food safety, biosecurity & medication and feed additive
alternatives are important issues. How do we address them?
EGGS
The egg sessions looks at current issues.
The Environment
What is the water, energy and carbon footprint of the Australian egg industry?
Where can improvements be made to reduce environmental impacts and resource
usage? How the industry can derive a benefit from spent hens, manure and egg
waste.
Food Safety & Labelling
What is the latest on a national approach to food safety? Can we improve truth
in labelling?
Feeds & Nutrition
Is the use of modelling in diet formulation relevant today? Should hens be fed
mash or pellets? The place for enzymes, prebiotics and probiotics in layer
diets.
Disease & Vaccination
Topics include the latest on spotty liver disease and effects of IBV on egg
quality implications on vaccination and management and the risk versus the cost
of vaccination.
Aviary Systems
Speakers will discuss the suitability of aviary systems for Australian
conditions, while a farmer will tell you about his experience with this system.
BARN & FREE-RANGE
The barn and free range session address the issues of bird health and welfare,
range management, shade, cannibalism management, alternatives to beak trimming
and maximising egg production. The topic includes the importance of pullet and
layer uniformity, tips on managing floor eggs and training pullets to use nests.
